Beads

graphic and material exploration

Beads is a compilation of research developed over a semester as an attempt to bridge the worlds of object and jewellery design through a specific lens: the bead. This intuitive, hands-on exploration of natural and synthetic materials stems from a personal fascination with beads and their many forms.

Guided by feelings of nostalgia for the long hours spent playing with beads as a child, Paloma Figueroa embraces a naïve and playful aesthetic to reinterpret these tiny objects. By upscaling familiar elements, such as beads and earring findings, she invites a new perspective on the everyday components of jewellery.

Through this process, she explores how textures and materials connect to touch, imagining how these small, often-overlooked objects might engage the senses differently if they were hand-sized. The booklet becomes an archive of sentimental value that celebrates the colourful materiality and emotional value of an object that many of us have come across.
